A robot that unloads containers on its own

A tracked robot enters the container, recognises the cartons using artificial intelligence and places them on the roller conveyor. No operator required.

The challenge

Unloading a container of cartons by hand is one of the heaviest and most repetitive jobs in logistics: confined spaces, summer heat and loads handled for hours on end. It is hard to find people willing to do it, and unloading times hold up the loading bays.

The solution

  • A tracked robot that enters the container and advances as it empties it.
  • AI-based vision that recognises the individual cartons in the wall, even when they differ from one another or are misaligned.
  • Automatic picking and placing onto the roller conveyor that takes the cartons into the warehouse.
  • Autonomous operation, with no operator inside the container.

What we did

Mechanical design, control panels, control and vision software, and commissioning. All under one roof, with a single point of contact for the customer.

Why it matters

The most strenuous work passes to the robot, and people move on to higher-value activities. The same approach, AI vision plus robotics, applies to mixed depalletising and to picking objects that differ from one another. Discover machine vision.
